 Women Talking – the Decision

The women from the Loewen and the Friesen family (clan) would have to come to a decision. They must find their way. They are quite conscious about the obstacles (either way) and the Pro and Cons are discussed carefully (by women who have never been outside of their colony).



So, what to choose:

  1. Do Nothing: symbolized by a picture of a field (acre) and clouds; nothing will change and remain in self-chosen complacency (and agony)
  2. Stay and Fight – symbolized by a men and a woman facing each other with knives in their hands - ready to fight (and kill)
  3. Leave – symbolized by a horse showing its back side and looking back (as to invite leaving).

Now, because I don't want to spoil the story, please read for yourself. Though very sad, the book is written in a witty, comical manner very worth reading it.

For me, this book touches on patriarchal and authoritarian religious sects and communities that are steered and influenced by - often times - messianic teachers, self-appointed prophets and unforgiving, power-hungry leaders – and, over time, their followers will become emotionally and intellectually captured and wrapped with an ever so fine but (almost) unbreakable yarn.

And yes, very sadly, history will repeat itself over and over again ….

Ciphered Bodies - Disciplined Bodies

As an addendum to what I have written before, I would like to write down some of the aspects Annette Peller pointed out in her book ‘ Chriffierte Körper – Disziplinierte Körper. Female Genital Cutting. Rituelle Verwundung als Statussymbol’.   To my knowledge, there is no English translation of the book. The title would probably read as follows: Ciphered Bodies - Disciplined Bodies. Female genital cutting. Ritual wounding as a status symbol ' . The book represents her PhD thesis and was written in 2000. First, Annette Peller prefers to use the word ‘ Excision ’ instead of cutting or mutilation, since it is somewhat more neutral and the term is better able to handle certain aspect of ritual wounding. Annette Peller did much of her research while living with the Arbore and other ethnic groups in Southern Ethiopia.
